It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the news of Pancake’s passing. Pancake came to us over two years ago. His family surrendered this elderly boy to a shelter with instructions to put him down. Thankfully, the shelter workers recognized that Pancake still had good quality of life. Friends of Homeless Animals coordinated Pancake’s transport/adoption so that he could live out the rest of his time with us.
Pancake’s physical condition was deplorable when he arrived. He was underweight, matted, and filthy. He was very sweet but some of his behaviors indicated that he was abused and likely lived outside.
This was his past though. Despite everything Pancake had been through, his heart was open. He seemed to sense that our goal was to give him a lifetime of peace, joy, and love in the time he had left...and he was all in. Pancake soaked up every ounce of love we gave him. Every touch, every kiss, every bedtime snuggle, every whispered sweet nothing seemed to go directly to Pancakes’s heart. He would reciprocate with the sweetest gaze, a closer snuggle, and what appeared to be a little smile.
There are no words for how much we’ll miss this special boy. He was the sweetest, gentlest, most angelic soul. He deserved so much more than what he got in life. Our only hope is that we gave Pancake as much love and joy as he gave us.
Rest In Peace, Gentle Boy.

It's a boy! Meet Poppy. He's a senior pup who was surrendered to a shelter as a stray. His condition was deplorable as he was dirty, matted and underweight. A rescue pulled him and provided medical care. Now Poppy, rickety and blind, is ready to live out his days at Silver Paws Haven and Hospice. Get ready for love and pancakes, Poppy!

We have sad news to share. Little Rita has passed away.
Rita was rescued from a cruelty/starvation situation over a year ago at the age of 15. She was blind, deaf, missing all of her teeth, and she weighed in at only 3.8 pounds. Friends of Homeless Animals pulled Rita from this situation, placed her with a wonderful foster mom, and eventually she came to Silver Paws Haven and Hospice to live out the rest of her time. We didn't know how much time Rita had left as she was so old and terribly fragile. Days? Weeks?
She surprised everyone by thriving in an environment where she was adored for 16 months. Rita loved her bed, the sunny spot, exploring the yard, getting hand fed, riding in her pouch, getting snuggles, and overseeing Chef Pancake on Pancake Sundays.
Our hearts are broken as we say goodbye to this little sweetheart.
Rest in peace Rita.

We have been super busy with the vet lately! Here's the latest...Grace is still taking her antibiotic. We follow up with the doctor in March to see if her white blood cell count has returned to normal. In the meantime, she is eating well and seems happy. We had a follow up for Pancake today. The antibiotic seems to be working well on his urinary tract infection. However, some of his lab work indicated kidney disease. We are going to monitor him closely to make sure he is comfortable. Lastly, Hazel had her yearly wellness check. She looks great!

Thank you for always supporting us. We're so very grateful for all of you.

Vet day! Pancake, Grace and Rita all received good reports. Rita is at her heaviest weight yet at 4.31 pounds. Grace's teeth look great after her dental a few months ago. We're going to start her on a joint supplement as her 3-leggedness causes her to compensate. Lastly, Pancake is going to start on fish oil to help his dry coat. All the pups loved seeing their wonderful vet and vet techs.

Rita visited the vet today. Unfortunately, she has a double ear infection. We're anxious to get her started on meds. On the bright side, she's a whopping 4 pounds! That's about a half pound weight gain since she was removed from a cruelty situation several weeks ago. Way to go, Rita!

Rita just spent some quality time at the vet. She had something called an oronasal fistula caused by a bad tooth. The doctor pulled the tooth as it was barely in the gum. Rita is on pain meds and antibiotics. We’re going to add in some prescription food to her regular food along with Forti Flora (canine probiotic). We will do everything we can to ensure that Rita is comfortable and happy.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of Stella’s passing. This was very unexpected as she started her day the usual way. However, late this afternoon her breathing suddenly changed and became very labored. The rapid onset combined with the sound in her chest indicated a blockage, most likely a blood clot. This is not uncommon with Cushings.
Stella came to us just 4 weeks ago thanks to a wonderful rescue that loves the seniors like we do. Thanks to them, Stella spent her final days in a home with a family that absolutely adored her. She was a silly girl who loved toys as much as she loved pancakes and snuggles.
Stella brightened every day with her antics and lovable charm. We can only hope we made her as happy as she made us.
Rest In Peace, Blue Eyed Stella

This is Salem...a sweet boy that was picked up by a Good Samaritan and brought to a vet. He was in absolutely terrible condition. He had a large growth on his lip, he was emaciated, dirty, missing almost all of his teeth, and limping severely from old injuries. After spending two days at the vet, we were asked to take him in. We agreed.
Salem spent this past Friday into Saturday with us eating all the delicious wet food he wanted, drinking fresh clean water, sleeping in a warm bed and getting lots of love. However, nothing prepared us for his horrific physical condition. We knew we had to bring him to our personal vet to be re-evaluated Saturday afternoon. Sadly, we were told the most humane thing we could do was to put him down.
Our hearts are shattered knowing this poor soul suffered so terribly for so long all by himself. We’re very grateful to the Good Samaritan who stepped in to help this little boy find peace.
Salem passed away in his new dad’s arms knowing safety and unconditional love for just a day. We arranged to have him cremated so that his ashes will be with us, his family for such a brief time, forever.

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we share the news of Queenie’s passing.
Queenie was dumped at a high kill shelter by the only family she ever knew. A loving rescue saved her and placed her with a woman who cared for her for a while. Unfortunately, Queenie's caretaker got sick and there were no family members willing to take her. Rather than follow the rescue's protocol for returning Queenie, the family of her caretaker tracked down the personal home of her rescue and tied Queenie to their fence in the middle of a cold night. Blind, elderly, abandoned for the second time, and heartbroken, Queenie eventually made it to us with the help of her rescue friends.
We weren’t sure how much time Queenie had left but we were determined that she experience as much love and joy as possible. She found true love in her dad who adored her completely. She was happiest when he snuggled her in his lap or carried her around in her sling.
We are heartbroken and will miss everything about Queenie...her little round fanny with the always-wagging tail, cloudy eyes, tiny ears, stinky breath, sexy long legs, soft pink tummy, sassy personality, the way she demanded her dad’s attention, her love of Pancake Sunday and so on. We can only hope that we brought Queenie as much joy as she brought us.
Our sweet girl passed away in her beloved dad’s arms knowing she is loved.

Just an update on our spending here at Silver Paws Haven and Hospice. So far this year your generosity has helped us cover almost $3,700 worth of expenses. The pic below is from the last three months. Since day one we have promised absolute transparency with our spending. This is your money after all and you deserve to know how it is being spent. Below are spreadsheets organized by month. Apologies for the fuzziness. It's much clearer on our Facebook page. For each expenditure listed we have a receipt. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us right here through our page. Thank you again for your support. We appreciate it more than words can ever express.

This has been a very busy week for us. Poor Ruthie the cat has been favoring her front leg. She had an examination and x-rays that lead our vet to think she might have tendinitis. We're treating her pain and hoping this is just a minor flare up.
Then there's Joey. We noticed him licking a spot near the top of his front leg. This spot looked very irritated. The vet is cautiously optimistic that this is nothing more than a cut that got infected. He's being treated with a topical antibiotic. Hopefully it clears up. If it doesn't, we'll likely have the cells examined for cancer as Joey had a cancerous spot on his skin before. Please send these little stinkers some healing vibes!

Silver Paws Haven and Hospice had our very first auction fundraiser. Our sales pitch was, "Eat what our dogs eat!" The highest bidder won the dry ingredients to Chef Pancake's special (gluten free) pancake recipe, a bottle of our favorite locally produced maple syrup, and a small handmade mosaic plaque. Who wouldn't want to enjoy Pancake Sunday? The $125.00 earned will go to the direct care of the pups. We are so grateful to everyone who bid. Thank you.

It's beautiful outside and the pups are so happy to be enjoying their yard. Toys everywhere, a pool to cool off in, and chickens to play with.

Who says you can't snuggle a Pancake? If the Pancake is as sweet and adorable as the one pictured below, you can. Welcome home Pancake! Read more about Pancake's story on The Pack page.

We are so very worried about Teddy. At a recent vet appointment we learned that his CHF is worsening. As a result, he's struggling with a cough. This is in addition to lung cancer, blindness and old age. We are trying a new med and adjusting one of his old meds. We're watching him very carefully for the signs indicating he is ready to say goodbye. With the exception of his bouts of coughing, he's eating, snuggling, chasing Grace around, barking at everyone, and exploring the yard.
Update: After speaking with the vet this afternoon we made the decision to say goodbye to Teddy. He still had an appetite so we took him out for a cheeseburger before going to the vet. He loved it. Teddy passed away in my arms as we told him how much we love him.

We are completely overwhelmed by the generosity of all of our donors. It is an absolute struggle to find the words to adequately thank everyone for their kindness. Please know that your donations have already been put to work as we head off to multiple vet appointments, stock up on diapers for Hazel, and purchase a year's worth of heartworm and flea/tick preventative. Our most heartfelt thank you for your support.

We are working very hard to get everything ready for our official launch. This website isn't even published yet and we're already posting Yappenings because we're so excited!
